Mark Whitley

Mark Whitley resides in Smith Grove, KY.

I remember receiving a hammer and a tool kit for my sixth birthday - that’s when my journey to becoming a furniture artist began. Dad was a cabinetmaker for the first few years of my life. Although he left the cabinet business, the shop full of tools was just a short walk from our house and was fertile ground for projects and creativity. At fifteen, my first wooden canoe was under construction, and at eighteen, my first kayak. From there, college took me to California and New Zealand, and on a five year road trip around America.

In 2000, I returned to Smiths Grove, Kentucky to play music and opened my furniture studio in a tiny back room of my Dad’s hardware store. In 2004, my wife and I spent a year building our home and a better space for me to work on a farm in Barren County, Kentucky. I enjoy the solitude of a studio where only trees are seen out the window, and the only sounds are those of the flowing creek, or a distant passing train. My clients are now scattered from coast to coast and my work has received numerous regional, statewide, and national honors. I find satisfaction in adding things of beauty to the lives of those I encounter.
