Dory Brown

As a child, Dory Brown grew up on her grandfather's farm where she frolicked barefoot and free in untamed forests, formal English gardens, and acres of daffodils and lilacs. There, she developed a feral love and respect for nature. Now, Dory and her husband John live deep in the sacred Cherokee lands nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina. For 25 years, they have been part of the mountain craft community, living close to the land and indigenous "handmade" values rather than fast-paced modern culture.

From 1997-2002, Dory took classes at Haywood Community College, Penland School of Crafts, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, learning from such teachers as John Cogswell and Thomas Mann. Dory found this time spent with fine craftsman, learning specific metal techniques, to be very stimulating. Dory continues to use the skills she acquired during that time and now teaches classes herself at John C. Campbell Folk School and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

Currently Dory is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the Carolina Designer Guild, and Piedmont Craftsmen Guild.
