About the Artist
Growing up in California, Sean McKenzie always knew he wanted to design and build furniture. So, at the age of 18, with a strong desire to learn the craft, he entered the Baulines Craft Guild furniture program and apprenticed under master woodworker Arthur Espenet Carpenter (1920-2006). Post-apprenticeship, Sean dedicated his time to working in various woodshops, soaking up every insight about furniture making and cabinetry.
In 1994, he landed a golden opportunity to restore the exquisite woodwork and cabinetry at San Francisco’s historic Fairmont Hotel, a Beaux-Arts style national gem over a century old. Equipped with this invaluable experience, Sean moved on to work on a multi-million-dollar estate in Sonoma County, a testament to his exceptional craftsmanship. This project was the catalyst for him to take the bold step of launching his own business.
In 1999, McKenzie Cabinetry & Fine Woodworking officially opened for business, specializing in the production of high-end custom cabinetry and furniture. Sean catered to both residential and commercial clients in San Francisco, helping them bring their spaces to life with high-end, personalized touches.
He relocated to South Carolina in 2019, where he has been working on his most ambitious project yet: the restoration of the historic Caleb Coker House in Society Hill.
