Hay Bale In Vintage Box

Description

Since 2014, Jaana Mattson has been pioneering new techniques in needle felting to capture the vibrancy, texture, and emotional nuance of the natural landscape. Her award-winning work and instructional insights were brought together in 2020 with the publication of Jaana Mattson’s Landscapes in Wool: The Art of Needle Felting, earning her national recognition in the fiber arts community.

A contented introvert by nature, Jaana finds deep joy in solitude—punctuated by invigorating forays into the world through workshops and art fairs. These brief but meaningful connections allow her to share her passion for art, landscape, and creative process, creating a rich counterbalance to the quiet, contemplative life that fuels her practice. She thrives on the fringes—popping into the community to engage and inspire, then retreating into her thoughts to explore the deeper meaning of “things.”

Jaana has pursued art and craft with intention and curiosity for as long as she’s had the freedom to choose. She holds a B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle, along with countless “hypothetical certificates” earned through years of intense independent study.

After being born, raised, and periodically snowbound in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jaana eventually followed the irresistible pull of the Blue Ridge Mountains, settling in North Carolina with no regrets. Today, she lives and works in her treetop home studio, accompanied by her beloved dogs and a daily view that continues to inspire her woolen landscapes.
