Miniature Vessel – Flourishing Collection

Description

Kelsey Schissel grew up in Wilkes County, North Carolina, immersed in craftsmanship through her father, Lyle Wheeler, a master chairmaker and blacksmith. At 11, while assisting him at a craft show in Banner Elk, she had a life-changing moment watching heritage potters Glenn and Lula Bolic work on a kick wheel. Captivated, she observed for hours until Lula invited her to touch the spinning clay. The instant connection sparked her passion for ceramics.

Determined to follow her dream, Kelsey earned a BFA in ceramics from UNC Asheville, established her first studio in 2004, and founded Plays in Mud Pottery in 2009. She joined the Southern Highlands Craft Guild in 2012 and expanded her vision in 2021 by opening The Gallery at Plays in Mud Pottery Studio.

Kelsey works with white stoneware clay sourced from Laguna Clay Company, hand-mixing all her glazes to achieve her signature style. Her designs feature wildflowers, irises, dandelions, and butterflies, brought to life through silk screens she creates herself. Each piece is meticulously adorned with 22k gold, which she applies by hand under a lighted magnifying glass. Every creation undergoes multiple firings and requires several hours of careful craftsmanship, resulting in pieces that are as intricate as they are timeless.
