Kelsey Schissel grew up in Wilkes County, North Carolina, immersed in the world of craftsmanship through her father, Lyle Wheeler, a master chairmaker and blacksmith. At just 11 years old, while helping her father at a craft show in Banner Elk, NC, she experienced a life-changing moment. There, she watched North Carolina heritage potters Glenn and Lula Bolic demonstrate their artistry on a kick wheel. Captivated by their skill, she spent hours observing them. Eventually, Lula invited Kelsey to touch the spinning clay. The moment her finger slid across the surface, she felt a spark ignite—a profound connection that cemented her desire to become a ceramic artist.
From that day forward, Kelsey dedicated herself to realizing her dream. She earned a BFA in ceramics from UNC Asheville, established her first studio in 2004, and founded Plays in Mud Pottery in 2009. Her work was further recognized when she became a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild in 2012. In 2021, she expanded her vision by opening The Gallery at Plays in Mud Pottery Studio.
Kelsey works with white stoneware clay sourced from Laguna Clay Company, hand-mixing all her glazes to achieve her signature style. Her designs feature wildflowers, irises, dandelions, and butterflies, brought to life through silk screens she creates herself. Each piece is meticulously adorned with 22k gold, which she applies by hand under a lighted magnifying glass. Every creation undergoes multiple firings and requires several hours of careful craftsmanship, resulting in pieces that are as intricate as they are timeless.
