Peacock Feather XXXIX

Description

Susan Lenz’s studio is located in a beautifully renovated former church in the historic Cateechee Mill Village, just outside Central, South Carolina. Susan identifies herself through a rich tapestry of roles: the daughter of German immigrants, a wife, mother, homeowner, businesswoman, avid traveler, custom picture framer, taxpayer, non-practicing Catholic, member of several nonprofit organizations, college graduate, blogger, and devoted companion to her cats, Ernie and Mr. Minnie. Yet above all, she is, first and foremost, an artist.

This piece features layers of polyester stretch velvet fused to recycled black industrial felt, creating a rich, textured foundation. A real peacock feather was encased beneath a delicate layer of sheer chiffon, then free-motion stitched.

When sourcing materials for her projects, Susan seeks out auctions and estate sales, and she welcomes contributions from friends and fellow quilters.

Susan’s work has been showcased in national publications, numerous juried exhibitions, and prestigious fine craft shows, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Smithsonian Craft Show. Additionally, her pieces are part of the permanent collections of the Textile Museum and the Department of the Interior Museum, both located in Washington, DC.
