Small Tumbler
Description
Ken Sedberry has been living and making pottery in western North Carolina for over four decades. He is a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild as well as the Piedmont Craftsmen. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1977, Ken accepted a residency at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana. He then returned to the East Coast and taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, until 1981 before eventually settling down in the Appalachian Mountains.
Ken fires his pottery in a wood-burning kiln, which creates unexpected hues and surfaces like those found in nature. More recently, he developed his own porcelain slip and clay body mined from a local deposit primarily of kaolin. This clay is rich in impurities like mica, quartz, and garnets that flash red or reddish-orange under the glazing of the pottery.
Along with his wife Connie and their two sons, Ken traveled on backpacking excursions through the jungles of Central America. From those experiences, he found inspiration in the colors and shapes of the tropical rainforests and coral reefs of the Caribbean to incorporate into his artwork.
