Stormy Seas Teacup
Description
Softly textured with a “stormy seas” motif, this porcelain teacup is handmade by Asheville-based studio potter Anja Bartels. Anja’s nautical surface designs are inspired by her love of the ocean and her childhood memories of growing up in a port city on the North Sea.
Each cup is hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel, then painted with a dark underglaze which is scraped away (using a technique called sgraffito) to reveal the white color of the porcelain underneath. The interior of the cup is painted with a gorgeous aqua blue celadon glaze.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, stencil artist Anja Bartels discovered pottery making while living in an intentional community in Virginia. Passion ignited, she returned home to study in the German Ceramics Guild. After completing a three-year apprenticeship with a master potter, she received her journeyman ceramics degree from the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. She is now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville.
Please Note: Each cup is individually hand-thrown and hand-carved. Expect slight variations from the images shown.
