Tall Disc Vase

Description

Jeff Margolin’s work is a dynamic exploration of form and ornamentation, drawing inspiration from traditional ethnic designs as well as visionary artists like H.R. Giger, M.C. Escher, and Salvador Dalí. Nature also plays a central role in his creative process, with leaves, rock formations, and the effects of water erosion informing his intricate designs. His distinctive touch is evident in every dimension of his work, as his forms, carvings, and finishing techniques coalesce into a signature style.

Margolin begins with a porcelain-like clay, either thrown or sculpted, leaving designated areas for carving. The painstaking carving process—his most time-intensive step—starts with designs sketched using a needle, followed by precise incisions with blades and meticulous cleaning with water and a brush. Once fully dry, the piece is sanded and burnished to a high sheen before being fired and smoked in a kiln. To enhance definition, a semi-transparent pigment is carefully applied to the carved details.
