The Visitor

Description

North Carolina artist Roger Martin has been creating wildlife sculptures for over 35 years. The majority of his work is sculpted in clay and then cast in bronze, using the lost-wax casting technique. This sculpture, titled The Visitor, is part of a limited edition of 15.

Roger started his professional career at the Schiele Museum of Natural History as an assistant curator. Intent on being a sculptor, he soon moved on to making mannequins for the taxidermy industry. Over the course of 20 years, he sculpted approximately 300 animal mannequins ranging from deer mice to Cape buffalo. The taxidermy profession provided him the opportunity to study animals around the world in their natural environments.

“My goal is to capture the essence or personality of the subject, not just an accurate anatomical replica of the species. I have spent much of my life studying animals. The more an artist knows their subject the easier it is to push the envelope to achieve a truly expressive piece.”
