Description
Ever since she was a young girl, Cindy Sugg of Tangled Studio has had a love affair with clay. One of her earliest and most cherished memories is a school trip to a Japanese potter’s studio during her time living in Japan. This was her first introduction to the potter’s wheel, the concept of throwing off the hump, and the thrill of gathering raw clay. That encounter sparked a lifelong passion that has led her to spend countless hours in front of the potter’s wheel in various settings, including universities, workshops, studios, and her own home studio.
Cindy gets immense satisfaction from crafting unique pottery pieces and dressing them up with paintings and drawings. She loves playing with nonrepresentational and organic designs, often using underglaze. She has also taught herself sgraffito, an Italian technique that involves scratching, a process that could take up to 20 hours for a single large bowl or platter. While pottery can be a demanding and unforgiving art form, Cindy sees every challenge as a learning opportunity. When a piece survives the final fire, she believes it’s nothing short of magic!
